McCarthy not bothered by critics

McCarthy has come under fire from fans since the 3-1 defeat at Crystal Palace in an FA Cup replay on Tuesday evening.

But McCarthy is simply focused on keeping the club in the Premier League and not fussed about proving wrong his doubters.

And the former Republic Of Ireland boss believes his players should take confidence from their last two league performances, against Liverpool and Hull, which ended in 0-0 and 2-2 draws respectively.

McCarthy said: "It's not about proving people wrong for me. I just want to do it for the club, for me, for the lads here. In my opinion, the club deserves to be in the Premier League for the way it conducts itself in the Premier League and in the city it's in.

"That in itself doesn't keep anyone in the Premier League, but it's a terrific place and if I stay up on the back of it, then brilliant. But that isn't to prove anyone wrong."
