Mick McCarthy admits he could have been sacked as Wolves boss after the recent poor run of results but for the "wonderful support" of club owner Steve Morgan and chief executive Jez Moxey.
Sunderland, who visit Molineux on Sunday in the Barclays Premier League clash, sacked Steve Bruce this week with Martin O'Neill the hot favourite to replace him. The two teams are just two points above the relegation zone with Wolves having managed only one win in 11 games.
McCarthy knows that his fate will ultimately be decided on how his team fares, but he said: "I have wonderful support from everyone at the club. I'm not stupid, at the end of it the manager has to get results, as we've seen with Steve (Bruce), so I'm not daft. But I never feel from game to game that I'm like 'Oh no, if only...'"
He added: "If I'd not got the wonderful support how do you think I'm still sat here with the results we've had?
"That tells you how good the people are (Morgan and Moxey) I'm working for. They're fantastic and we have a real mutual respect.
"If the time comes when it's not to be, it's not to be. But that time is not now. They're great people and it's a great club."
McCarthy is bracing himself for another tense home game after the recent clashes with Swansea and Wigan yielded four points.
He said: "We're used to them because of our run of results. It increases the pressure and the importance of the game for all of us. But that's what being in the Premier League is about and that's the game we're in.
"People say we are one win away from mid-table. I know we'd be up there if that happened, but then do we go 'Phew' if that happens?
"You've got to keep the intensity up. It's a huge game for us and we need to get something out of it. You can take comfort from having done well in other high pressure games. I know we're all right with these type of games."
