McCarthy confident over Jones deal

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy is confident midfielder Dave Jones will sign a new contract sooner rather than later.

Jones has been linked with a move to a trio of Barclays Premier League clubs in newly promoted Newcastle, Bolton and Blackburn.

But McCarthy is optimistic Jones will put pen to paper on the new deal offered to him at the tail end of last season, and said: "I want Dave to stay. He's got a year left of his contract and it's the same situation as where we were in March. We're trying to sort something out. Hopefully that will get done. I think it will get sorted out fairly quickly."

He added: "We want him to stay and be part of the squad and I haven't heard anything from anyone."

Jones re-established himself in the side during the second half of the campaign and played a major part in Wolves securing top-flight status for a second successive season.

Meanwhile, McCarthy believes striker Andy Keogh will want to remain in the Premier League - should he leave Molineux - after Doncaster have made clear their desire to sign him.

Keogh made an impressive start to last season but slipped down the pecking order as McCarthy opted to play Kevin Doyle as the lone striker.

The former Republic of Ireland boss has also brought in Steven Fletcher from Burnley during the summer for around £6million.

McCarthy said: "I think Andy will want to stay in the Premier League. He was our best player at the start of last season.

"There's also no chance of Andy going out on loan."
