It was expected by many but Wolves have today announced that Wolves goalkeeper Matt Murray is to retire due to injury Wolves have been quick to praise Murray for his time at Molineux with one possible hightlight being the 2003 play off win against Sheffield United Gaffer Mick McCarthy said on the official site "It's a sad day when anyone has to retire, even more so when it's a 29-year-old goalkeeper that in my opinion would have been one of the England regulars had he been fit,  That only compounds the feelings of disappointment and sorrow that we all feel for him.  It's not just that - he's worked so hard to come back from all his injuries. "Despite all the knockbacks, despite being told it was three months and then six months he has fought and fought tooth and nail and worked as hard as anybody I ever seen.  It's finished off with disappointment, but through it all he has never once let his demeanour slip into anything other than Matt Murray, that nice big fellow that he is.  His personality and his smile have never wavered.  It's a sad day for all of us and I'd just to like to thank him from everyone for everything he has done for this club."   2003 Play off final penalty save Chief Executive Jez Moxey said "Everyone at the club is devastated for him, and yet amid all that disappointment there is the knowledge that once again he has made a sensible and mature decision in what are clearly extremely difficult circumstances.  Matt is what I call a Wolves man - he's one of us," he added. "He's a great guy and someone who has always represented Wolves in a hugely positive way.  He was also an extremely talented goalkeeper, and I have no doubt in my mind that had he stayed fit he would have gone on to become England's number one.   Recent Career History By Club (1999 onwards) Team Debut Apps (+ sub) Goals Yellows Reds Hereford United 15 Nov 2008 3 (0) 0 0 0 Wolverhampton Wanderers 30 Apr 2006 48 (0) 0 0 0 Tranmere Rovers 25 Mar 2006 2 (0) 0 0 0 Wolverhampton Wanderers 31 Aug 2002 52 (0) 0 0 0 Kingstonian 21 Oct 2000 1 (0) 0 0 0 Recent Career History By Season (1999 onwards) Season First App. Apps (+ sub) Goals Yellows Reds 2008/2009 15 Nov 2008 3 (0) 0 0 0 2006/2007 05 Aug 2006 47 (0) 0 0 0 2005/2006 25 Mar 2006 3 (0) 0 0 0 2004/2005 08 Jan 2005 2 (0) 0 0 0 2003/2004 16 Aug 2003 2 (0) 0 0 0 2002/2003 31 Aug 2002 48 (0) 0 0 0 2000/2001 21 Oct 2000 1 (0) 0 0 0 Appearances 106; Goals 0; Yellow cards 0; Red cards 0
