Jackett demands more after cup win

Wolves manager Kenny Jackett demanded more from his side after they battled their way to a hard-earned 2-1 Capital One Cup success against Newport County at Molineux.

Wolves looked to be heading for a major upset when Scott Boden gave Newport a sixth-minute lead before Nouha Dicko and Benik Afobe were on target in each half to seal a hard-earned success.

But Jackett was far from impressed by his side's display and he said: "I thought we were laboured, I thought we were pretty poor in possession, didn't really have a lot of ideas and didn't have a lot of fluency.

"Whenever you make five changes as a manager quite often that happens.

"But the main thing is that we got through and that is a really good thing.

"We have won the game, we have won our opening two games of the season in different competitions and we can build on that but tonight at home we do feel that we can play better.

"Of course you have to give Newport every respect and it was a big game for them.

"They played to that and gave it everything they have got. But I still feel that we are capable of better.

"I didn't feel that we moved the ball particularly well and our start is a concern.

"We are very, very tentative if we have the ball. We must have more purpose about our start about exactly what we are doing to do to set the tone for the game.

"We started with a lot of possession but didn't do a lot with it and I thought that made the crowd nervous and that reflected on the players."

But Jackett was pleased to see Dicko and Afobe on the scoresheet and he added: "To get a goal apiece is good for them. Both are off the mark early in the season which is nice for them. It helps your confidence and you can build on that."

Despite the defeat, Newport manager Terry Butcher was justifiably proud of his players and said: "I am not quite proud I am very proud. I think it was a fantastic performance.

"I thought they were absolutely tremendous, full of heart. We wanted them to be brave and they certainly where today.

"It was a good start and you are looking to say can you get to half-time at one-nil.

"Then we got hit by a sucker punch and for the winning goal Scott Barrow is adamant that he played the ball. Even their player said that he played it. The referee has got that one 100 per cent wrong. In the end it cost us the tie.

"It was a massive effort and in the end they (Wolves) were kicking the ball long and running into the ball into corners just to try and waste a bit of time and that speaks volumes for our players.

"We have started the season with two defeats but we played well in the first game and played really well tonight.

"We have more belief now and I think our seasons starts on Saturday (against Stevenage)."
