Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has defended Mick McCarthy's decision to name a weakened Wolves side at Old Trafford.
McCarthy could find himself in hot water with the Premier League after being asked to explain why he made ten changes to the side that lost 3-0 at the hands of the champions on Tuesday.
The Wolves boss opted to rest all of the outfield players that ground out a surprising win over Tottenham the previous weekend with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger being particularly critical of the move.
But after his side comfortably overcame the much-changed visitors, Ferguson has defended McCarthy's right to select who he wants.
'Mick McCarthy did the right thing for Wolves,' said the veteran Scot.
'We looked at their performance against Tottenham and the amount of running they had to do. I said five or six of those players couldn't play against us.
'In addition to the actual match, they'd been down to London, then they had to travel to Manchester and they also play Burnley at the weekend.
'We didn't think they'd play their full side. We worked through the ones who did all the running and worked out who we thought it would be.
'We didn't expect ten changes but we weren't far wrong. To my mind, there was no discernible difference in the Wolves team that could have played to the one that did.'
