Edwards not looking for excuses

David Edwards feels Wales were short of luck during their Euro 2012 qualifying defeat in Montenegro - but he is not looking for an excuse.[LNB] Wales slipped to a 1-0 defeat last night, a result that leaves them having to play catch-up in a group that also includes England, Switzerland and Bulgaria.[LNB]Montenegro made most of the running in Podgorica and Roma striker Mirko Vucinic, the game's outstanding player, could easily have scored more than a single goal.[LNB]Wales produced a rousing finish, though, and were unlucky when substitute Simon Church headed against the bar and had another effort disallowed for offside late on.[LNB]Edwards, 24, said: "It's another disappointing night and we've got to do better.[LNB]"When we come to places like this we've got to get results.[LNB]"I think we deserved a bit better from the game, but at the end of the day it's down to us to get the result.[LNB]"On the other side of the coin we didn't get much luck.[LNB]"We had all the effort but maybe lacked that bit of devilment.[LNB]"Once they got their goal it was always going to be hard to break them down.[LNB]"That was a catalogue of things. We lost the ball high up the pitch and we missed a couple of tackles and it ended up in our net.[LNB]"It was a shame because I thought we started the game quite well in the first 15 minutes and then they started to catch us on the break.[LNB]"But we battled well and we started to create a few chances towards the end."[LNB]Church thought he had equalised when he stabbed the ball home after Mladen Bozovic had parried a Robert Earnshaw shot.[LNB]It was the second controversial moment in the game after James Collins had earlier left the action with a head injury caused by an apparent stray elbow.[LNB]The Aston Villa defender appeared to be caught by Miodrag Dzudovic as the pair challenged for the ball on the edge of the Montenegro box.[LNB]Referee Anastassios Kakos - whose appointment was criticised by Wales manager John Toshack before the game due to his homeland Greece's proximity to Montenegro - let the incident go unpunished.[LNB]"I was off the pitch and I thought it was blatant," said Edwards.[LNB]"He's gone up, he's elbowed him in the box and it should be a penalty, but obviously the ref didn't see it like that.[LNB]"I can't understand why he didn't give it when he was giving silly, little fouls against James Collins for heading the ball.[LNB]"We were a bit unlucky with the goal and they are not showing any replays of it over here, so I'm guessing that tells its own story. "I thought the ref was poor but we have got to do better.[LNB]"We can't start blaming other people, it's down to us on the pitch."[LNB]David Vaughan, meanwhile, felt Wales had shown enough signs to be positive for the rest of the campaign.[LNB]Wales return to action next month with back-to-back games against Bulgaria and Switzerland.[LNB]The 27-year-old Blackpool player said: "I thought we tested them a bit towards the end of the second half so it was disappointing not to get a point from the game.[LNB]"The goal gave them and the crowd a big lift and it was disappointing to concede in the way we did, but we have to move on to the next game.[LNB]"John said at half-time we needed to be more positive and try to do a little bit better.[LNB]"We did that and we made a few changes, which seemed to help as well.[LNB]"Hopefully we can carry the second-half performance into the second game."
