Davenport eyes Black Cats deal

Alex McLeish and Mick McCarthy are long-term admirers of the West Ham centre-back and with both managers keen to strengthen their defence this summer, Davenport has emerged as a real target. Blues and Wolves tried in vein to lure him to the midlands back in January before he eventually opted to pen a loan deal with Sunderland until the end of the current campaign. With the season almost at an end, the 26-year-old has stressed he will not return to Upton Park this summer and would be keen to remain at the Stadium of Light. But there is a glimmer of hope for the newly-promoted duo in that it could all change if the Black Cats were to be relegated to the Championship. Davenport told The Sunderland Gazette: "The main focus for me is to do the job for Sunderland, then we'll get to the summer and then see what the situation is. But I'd definitely sign if Sunderland wanted me in the summer. I've really enjoyed myself here and I settled in really quickly. "Whatever happens, I won't be at West Ham next season. I've got another year left on my contract but I'll be moving on in the summer."
