Caretaker manager Terry Connor will receive a sizeable bonus if he keeps Wolves in the Barclays Premier League after taking charge until the end of the season, club owner Steve Morgan has confirmed.
Assistant-manager Connor has been put in charge for the final 13 games of the season - starting with today's clash with Newcastle at the Sports Direct Arena. Club owner Steve Morgan has challenged the 50-year-old to stake a claim to take the job permanently after replacing the sacked Mick McCarthy.
Morgan confirmed: "The terms of Terry's appointment are private and confidential. But let's just say he might be able to have a nice bottle of wine, or two or three, if he keeps us up!"
He continued "For anyone coming into this position, there would be an incentive to stay up. It is a standard part of our management packages, incentives relating to where we are in the league."
Morgan added: "At the moment it's an interim appointment but he's got a chance to stake a claim. We've got 13 cup finals left.
"I think we've got to see how Terry does. I think it would be unfair to Terry to do anything other than that."
Morgan admits he has taken heart from other number twos stepping up into management with success, including Jose Mourinho.
He said: "We have spoken to a number of high-calibre people and at another time, a number of them would be considered again.
"But it is Terry now and, at the end of the season, we will review it. He has not been a number one before so it is sensible to make it a short-term appointment.
"But people like Brian McDermott, Chris Hughton and Jose Mourinho, who was Bobby Robson's number two at Porto, moved up. If Terry does half as well as Mourinho we will all be very pleased!"
