German international midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger has signed a three-year contract with Bundesliga outfit VfL Wolfsburg, the club announced on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old, capped 52 times, had been a free agent since being released by English side West Ham United when they were relegated from the Premier League last season.

Hitzlsperger's spell at the Hammers was hampered by a serious thigh injury that delayed his debut until late February.

Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath said he was delighted to have secured a player who had title-winning experience, having won the German league championship in 2007 with VfB Stuttgart.

"I am always willing to take on players who know what it is like to win the German title," said Magath, who has coached both Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg to the title.

Hitzlsperger, who held talks with Premier League club Wolves without agreeing terms, has also had spells with English side Aston Villa and Serie A outfit Lazio.
