Wolfsburg on Friday announced that they were releasing German international midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger, as well as Bosnia international Hasan Salihamidzic and Brazilian Chris.
The announcement was made by coach Felix Magath following the club's final training session prior to the summer break.
He said that 30-year-old Hitzlsperger's contract, which was due to run in 2014, had been prematurely terminated "by mutual consent".
The contracts of midfielder Salihamidzic, 35, and defender Chris, 33, were not renewed.
Bundesliga champions for the first and only time in their history in 2009, Wolfsburg finished the 2011-12 season in eighth place.
