Woking 2-2 Brighton: Match Report

Baz earns Brighton win Cristian Baz hit the winning spot-kick for League One leaders Brighton as they finally saw off non-league Woking after a 2-2 draw in their FA Cup first round replay. Brighton were reduced to 10 men when assistant manager Mauricio Taricco was sent-off in extra time of a remarkable match which ended 2-2 before Woking failed to convert any of their three shootout penalties. Matt Sparrow pounced to slot Brighton ahead on 57 minutes but a 72nd-minute own goal from Seagulls skipper Gordon Greer levelled as the tie went to extra-time. Substitute Ola Sagbanmu sent the Kingfield Stadium wild by heading the Conference South side ahead on 103 minutes but the lead lasted only two minutes when Elliott Bennett crashed in a dramatic equaliser. The Cards' game-plan was obvious from the offset, defend deep and counter-attack, and it nearly paid dividends when Elvis Hammond's cross was skied over from five yards by Jerome Federico. But playing his first game for six years, 37-year-old player-assistant manager Taricco's flighted delivery produced the goods as Barnes' header fell invitingly for Sparrow to stroke home. The part-timers forced their way back when Hammond cut-back and Greer turned the ball past his own keeper under pressure from Sagbanmu. Sagbanmu had missed a free header but the 18-year-old substitute was on target in extra-time before Bennett produced a thunderbolt and Taricco was dismissed for a second yellow. Sagbanmu, Craig Falconbridge and Hammond all missed in the shoot-out before Baz rolled in the winner to set up a second round clash with FC United of Manchester.
