Wigan reject Baines approach
10 Jul 2007 - 16:42:47
Wigan Athletic manager Chris Hutchings has rejected an approach from Sunderland for £5million-rated full-back Leighton Baines.
The 22-year-old has been linked with a number of Wigan's Premier League rivals this summer after starring during England's recent run to the semi-finals of the Under-21 European Championship.
But Hutchings has warned off the Black Cats and any other potential suitors by claiming Baines is not for sale.
"I've told (Sunderland boss) Roy Keane that Leighton isn't for sale. He's part of this club," said Hutchings.
"Everyone does have a price but I'm happy to keep him as I'm building a team."
Meanwhile, new Wigan signing Jason Koumas has revealed the lure of playing in the top-flight was too much to turn down.
The Wales international completed the formalities over his £5.3million switch to the JJB Stadium from West Brom on Tuesday and is relishing the opportunity to play in the Premier League.
"It is a great challenge being back in the Premiership," he said.
"When you get to my age you want to test yourself against the better players and teams.
"I'm confident in my own ability and have nothing to prove. I'm looking forward to showing what I can do."
