Wigan off the bottom with West Brom win

Wigan moved off the bottom of the English Premier League after beating West Bromwich Albion 2-1 to notch up just their third win of the season here on Saturday.

Steven Reid opened the scoring for West Brom with a fine, curling 20-metre free-kick past Wigan's Omani goalkeeper Ali al-Habsi after 33 minutes.

But Wigan hit back four minutes later when Victor Moses lined up a shot from the edge of Ben Foster's box and fired into the far top corner.

Reid turned from hero to villain for West Brom after he brought down Moses going into the box in the 57th minute, Jordi Gomez sending Foster the wrong way from the penalty spot for a lead Wigan just managed to hold on to for an invaluable win.

There was, however, drama to come as Paul Scharner spurned a great chance for a late equaliser, the unmarked Austrian defender heading Jerome Thomas' cross wide of Habsi's post.

The victory saw Roberto Martinez's Wigan move three places off the basement, Bolton going bottom with Sunderland and Blackburn in 18th and 19th places respectively.

It will also come as a massive fillip for a side that enjoys the worst goalscoring record in the league (along with West Brom and Stoke) and now has Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United as their next three opponents.
