Whelan praise for Martinez
Dave Whelan has taken the time to publicly praise his manager Roberto Martinez ahead of Monday's game with Blackburn Rovers. A game where the Latics may secure Premier League survival.
The Latics chairman has been praised from all sections of the football world for having the strentgth of character to stick by his manager during dark times of poor results this season.
Although there is still plenty of football to be played the Latics are odds on the survive and Whelan has nothing but praise for his manager.
“When you play well, you deserve to get your rewards, and we have had some very, very bad luck during the course of the season,” Whelan told the Evening Post.
“We’ve also had referees giving some incredible decisions against us, and the fact is we should not be where we are in the table.
In particular Whelan was delighted with the level of finishing that was on display against Newcastle on Saturday.
The Latics stormed to a 4-0 lead in the game and never looked back.
“We have played so well at times this season and not managed to get the points on the board, but this time we created chances and took them – that was the difference," added Whelan.
“The quality of football we played was simply outstanding – and the four goals we scored were out of the top drawer.
“Victor Moses really stamped his authority on the game in that first 20 minutes – two brilliant goals which laid the platform.
“Franco di Santo also deserved his goal because he worked so hard throughout the game.”
Next up for the Latics is the trip to Ewood Park for a game that could well confirm Premier League survival for Wigan and relegate Blackburn Rovers.
