Whelan hints at Spain swoops

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has admitted that his club are currently trying to sort out deals for a number of new players.

The Latics have already snapped up midfielder Jordi Gomez following the appointment of Roberto Martinez as manager, with other targets on the Spaniard's wish-list.

He told the Evening Post: "We got our priority list from Roberto and we're working hard on it.

"Jordi Gomez was right at the top and we moved very quickly on that, we're moving on others as well.

"But there are a lot of players away on holiday and I think the market will only rev up in about a week or ten days.

"Roberto lives for football and his knowledge of the Spanish league is unbelievable. He knows all the players - how they play, where they play - he's just got it.

"His knowledge of football is immense. He's already watched every game we've played in the past three years."
