Strike signings boost Latics

Wigan Athletic manager Paul Jewell was delighted with the efforts of his new-look strikeforce in the crucial 1-0 victory at home to Portsmouth.

Recent signings Julius Aghahowa and Caleb Folan combined well for the Latics, who ended a nightmare run of eight straight league defeats to move five points clear of the relegation places.

A relieved Jewell commented: "The front two only had one training session on Friday to get to know each other.

"Julius didn't jump off the plane from Ukraine until 10pm on Thursday. He has come from pre-season training with Shakhtar Dontesk into a game which was probably the quickest he has ever played in.

"Caleb did well too. He has been playing in League One and coming here has been a big learning curve.

"The two of them were a threat and the beauty is both of them will get better."

Of his side's aims for the coming weeks, Jewell added: "If you offered us fourth bottom at the end of the season, we would take it now.

"We have just won a round, but we have another 13 to go. We need to find another four or five wins and hopefully we can do that soon."
