Sheffield Wednesday match abandoned

Sixty minutes in, and one goal to the good, and the game was abandoned due to heavy rain at Hillsborough last night.

The pictures clearly show that there was visible standing water on the on the pitch and the curcial moment came when Nick Powell's attempted shot was severley influenced by the water.

The torrent of rainfall during the early period of the second half couldn't have been predicted and the pitch struggled to cope.

New Wigan boss Uwe Rosler was quick to praise the officials who he felt dealt well with a difficult situation.

He told the club's official website: "Firstly I thought the officials did very well tonight in very difficult conditions. The decision was harsh on us because we were winning, but it was the right one.

"He came over to the dug outs in the second half and told us that he would play a few more minutes and see how the conditions developed before making a decision, and he could only make one in the end.

"At times they were a joy to watch in how the passed the ball around and created so many chances against a team who are on the up after victories against some of the division's big sides and have good momentum behind them."The way the game was progressing I felt we would have had more counter-attack opportunities and would have introduced players from the bench to exploit the room beyond the defence."

The match will need to be replayed, much to the annoyance of Wigan Athletic goalscorer James McClean who tweeted: "Well that sucks! Hows your luck ehh! #cheersref,"

But the last word much go to new boss Rosler who summed up the night perfectly when he said: "I told you things would never be dull under me."

The Latics will face Reading at home on Saturday afternoon.
