Scharner free to leave Latics

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan will allow an unsettled Paul Scharner to leave the club this summer.

The Austria defender has been with the Latics for three seasons but his future at the JJB Stadium has been in doubt since he revealed his intention to move on immediately after the last season ended.

Scharner has been linked with a move to Sunderland where he would link-up with recently departed Wigan manager Steve Bruce.

But although doubting whether the defender will head to the Black Cats, Whelan will not stand in his way should a club come knocking this summer.

"Scharner may go," claimed Whelan. "He is an unusual character to say the least.

"He even said if Steve Bruce tries to take him to Sunderland he wouldn't go because it was a backwards step.

"But if he comes to me and asks to go, I'll say yes - even though we don't want him to go."
