Wigan Athletic defender Emmerson Boyce faces several weeks on the sidelines after it was confirmed that he broke two ribs in the crucial 1-0 win at Manchester City.
The former Crystal Palace star sustained the injury in a collision with City's Richard Dunne.
Latics boss Paul Jewell said: "It's a shame for him as he's been magnificent this season.
"But he's the sort of lad who will come back at the earliest possible opportunity, I'm confident of that."
Defensive partner Matt Jackson said of Boyce: "He's been an absolute revelation.
"He's quietly got on with his job without grabbing headlines but has been doing an absolutely vital job for us at the back.
"He's the sort of player who puts his body on the line time and time again and you could see that on Saturday.
"Even after feeling pain, he carried on until it was absolutely impossible to do anymore. I don't know about being an unsung hero but all the players and the manager certainly appreciate the valuable job he does for the team."
