Pollitt pens new Latics deal
10 Jul 2008 - 08:07:38
Veteran Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Mike Pollitt will remain at the JJB Stadium after agreeing a new one-year contract.
Pollitt, 36, was out of contract this summer but will once again provide back-up to regular number one Chris Kirkland in the coming season.
He made just one first-team appearance for the Latics last season, but manager Steve Bruce was delighted with the decision of the experienced keeper to stay with the club.
"Polly's a terrific goalkeeper and I'd have no hesitation in playing him in any game," he told the club's official website.
"He understands the situation that Chris has possession of the shirt at the minute.
"But that can change and you need at least two good goalkeepers competing to bring the best out in each other.
"At the moment we have three with Carlo Nash. I'm delighted he's agreed to stay with us for another year because he's a character and a great lad to have around the dressing room".
Meanwhile, Sweden defender Andreas Granqvist has left the club after sealing a move to FC Groningen.
The 23-year-old failed to establish himself in the first team at the JJB Stadium following his arrival last summer.
