Pollit undergoes elbow surgey

Veteran goalkeeper Mike Pollitt has undergone elbow surgery and is likely to be out of action for a few weeks. The 38 year old goalkeeper underwent a similar operation last year on his other elbow and the operations are simply to clear up a joint following years of wear and tear. The fact that the Latics have invested the time to miss Pollitt for the last few weeks of the season hints that a further year is likely to be on the table for the popular goalkeeper. Speaking about the operation to the Wigan Evening Post, manager Roberto Martinez said: “Mike went in yesterday for surgery to clean up the joint around his elbow. “It was just a matter of wear and tear – he had the same problem with his other elbow last year and that was corrected very quickly too. “It was a straight-forward operation and he should be back in the next two or three weeks.” The Latics boss has also recalled youngster Lee Nicholls from his loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday to provide cover for Ali Al-Habsi. Should anything happen to the Omani international, then both Chris Kirkland, and Nicholls are ready to step up. Martinez added: “Chris has been working extremely hard over the last 8-10 weeks, and has been a real example to the rest of the squad with the way he has been training. “He is a credit to himself and it shows you the strength in depth we have across the board at the football club just now. “We’ve also called Lee back from his loan at Sheffield Wednesday to give us extra depth in that department, and they’ll all be working closely this week with Inaki (Bergara, goalkeeping coach).”
