Martinez to remain grounded
17 Aug 2009 - 10:33:35
Roberto Martinez has urged his Wigan Athletic players to remain grounded despite opening the new season with an impressive 2-0 away win at Aston Villa.
A stunning first-half strike from Hugo Rodallega and second goal from Jason Koumas ensured Martinez's Latics reign started off in positive fashion.
But despite the victory at Villa Park, Martinez is refusing to get carried away and is determined to keep his players grounded.
"They put us under massive pressure, looked bright and sharp and I'm proud of the players with how we dealt with that situation," he said.
"After that, we deserved to win the game.
"We showed we can go away from home and try to win games in the Premier League.
"It's important to get results, but I think we'll get more confidence from the display and knowing that we're capable of going to somewhere like Aston Villa and winning.
"We still have a lot of work in front of us and there is a long, long way to go.
"We just need to view the whole experience as a step forward, but knowing that we haven't done anything either."
