Martinez targets strike swoop
06 Nov 2009 - 15:02:37
Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez has set his sights on trying to sign a new striker in the January transfer window.
The Latics have scored just 12 times in 11 Premier League games this season, with Martinez well aware that he needs more firepower.
He told reporters: "That is something we will have to look at and do something in the next window.
"We need to strengthen as we have lost a player (Marlon King) and cannot leave ourselves open.
"We know our budget, the money we have to spend. But it is not just about that.
"It is about finding the right players and personalities. We will work on different markets to try and make things happen."
Meanwhile, Martinez has spoken up for summer recruit Jason Scotland, who has yet to find the net for the Latics.
He added: "Jason has a great belief and a great arrogance in his play, certainly since we defeated Chelsea.
"He may be waiting to score, but he is contributing to the team in a big way. It is a sign of a good striker when you give a lot to your team without getting goals.
"His overall play is exceptional in that respect. I am delighted with him and all the players who have had to adjust to the Premier League."
