Martinez taking positives

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has vowed not to dwell on his side's performance in their 1-0 defeat to Wolves on Tuesday. The Latics were sunk by a sixth minute Andy Keogh header in their first home game of the season at the renamed DW Stadium following their impressive 2-0 win at Aston Villa on the opening day. The performance was a far cry from the one that took many by surprise at Villa Park as the team struggled to deal with Martinez's brand of flowing football. The Spaniard has made his name in his young managerial career by creating exciting attacking football with Swansea and has vowed to recreate the effect with the Latics in the Premier League. However, after an excellent opening day, his side appeared to struggle with their new tactics on Tuesday with many of the players having played under Steve Bruce's previous regime of percentage football. To their credit, Wigan regrouped for the second half and began to find their feet and although they failed to find an equaliser, Martinez is taking positives from the improvement. "In the second half the players showed a good mentality to keep their composure, to know what we want to do and dictate the game, which is something we have to get really good at - especially playing at home," he said. "It would have been really easy to throw the towel in and not understand what was needed but I felt some of the characters knew what was needed and they were patient. "Even in situations where the whole environment could have got frustrating, we found the answers, although we did not create enough chances. "I felt we dictated the play really well in the second half without creating the chances and that is something we need to improve. "Overall I was pleased but we probably did not have that final boost of energy to create those chances. "We've had a lot of new players at the club and it will take a little bit of time to get that chemistry and those partnerships going."
