Martinez lauds lethal Latics
14 Sep 2009 - 15:53:31
Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez hopes the narrow 1-0 win against West Ham United will prove to be a pivotal point in his team's campaign.
The Latics had been struggling since winning at Aston Villa on the opening weekend of the campaign but Hugo Rodallega's 55th-minute strike proved to be enough to sink Gianfranco Zola's side at the DW Stadium.
"Everyone at Wigan Athletic pulled in the same direction to make sure the points stayed here, and that's the only way we can be successful," the Spaniard told the Evening Post.
"The most pleasing aspect was probably the chemistry we showed with the fans in the last five minutes.
"The mentality of the players, to do what was required, was great, but the fans pushed us around the field in every single direction.
"That's the hardest thing to achieve in football, and I was very proud and delighted to see it. If we can show that throughout the season we will get a lot of rewards.
"But there were many positives. We had phases of good play, the attitude of the players was fantastic, the concentration levels were what was needed, and we prevented a very good side becoming comfortable on the ball."
