Martinez laments Latics woe
31 Jan 2010 - 10:40:44
Roberto Martinez was once again left to rue his side's defending of set-pieces as his Wigan Athletic team slumped closer to the relegation zone after losing 1-0 to Everton at the DW Stadium.
Tim Cahill headed home a late winner from a corner for David Moyes' side just four days after the Latics had defender naively in their 2-1 defeat at Blackburn Rovers.
A dejected Martinez said: "The players don't deserve the feeling they have right now. From the first minute to the last we tried to dictate the play, create chances and, in the first half, I think we created enough to deserve a lead.
"In the end we got ourselves in a situation where we couldn't defend a corner, a set-piece, and that's really disappointing and hard to take.
"Now we all have to be together in order to react in the right manner and try to look through the result. Yes it was a blow not to get anything from the game but the performance was good enough to win.
"It was the same problem on Wednesday when we were not able to defend a set-piece and it let us down again.
"We have to improve in that department, we can't leave ourselves with mountains to climb in every game, we have to be solid enough to defend from every set-play."
