Martinez finds winning formula

Roberto Martinez insists Wigan will not be getting carried away following their impressive victory over Chelsea last weekend. The Latics stunned Carlo Ancelotti's side at the DW Stadium as they brought the Blues' unbeaten start to the season to an abrupt halt. A 3-1 victory on home soil represented the first time Wigan had taken three points off one of the 'big four' in a Premier League fixture, following 34 previously unsuccessful attempts. The success is expected to help kick-start the Latics' season, while it has also been branded as the moment Martinez's coaching career came of age. The Spaniard is refusing to read too much into the result just yet, but he does admit that the Chelsea win was a direct result of slight tweaks he has made to the mindset at Wigan following his arrival from Swansea over the summer. Martinez told Sky Sports News: "From these kind of results and performances you get a lot of confidence, but we have got a very level-headed squad. We never over-react after defeat and we never over-react after a victory. "The players know they have been working extremely hard to be able to compete with players from the top four. "In many aspects we had been showing that that kind of performance was coming. It's about hard work and making sure you are working as a team and I think that we can compete against the top four. "It has been a problem in the past, 34 games without beating one of the top four in the Premier League, and that tells us that it was about much more than football aspects. "We are delighted that at the moment we can now say that we have beaten one of the top four."
