Wigan Athletic teenager James McCarthy could be set for a lengthy lay-off after picking up what appeared to be a serious ankle injury during the 1-1 draw with Bolton Wanderers at the DW Stadium.
Latics boss Roberto Martinez fears the worst after the former Hamilton Academical youngster had to be stretchered from the pitch following Fabrice Muamba's first-half challenge.
Martinez confirmed after the draw: "He's gone to hospital and we'll get the results over the next 24 hours but it doesn't look too good.
"It's a real shame because he's a very young man but he's very mature on the pitch and he's been performing in a very special manner.
"It's a difficult ball for a midfielder - it's a straight ball. When you look at the replay, he clearly gets his ankle first.
"It's disappointing. The intent is to play the ball. It's from behind.
"It's one of those actions - you're sending your team-mate into the lion's den. But he's young and he's very, very fit and we hope it's not as bad as it looks."
