Martinez backing youngsters
Despite the midweek cup defeat to Bradford, Latics boss Roberto Martinez is backing his youngsters to come good for the club in the future.
The Capital One Cup has represented a good opportunity for the youngsters at the club to gain first team experience with players such as Callum McManaman, Danny Redmond, and Fraser Fyvie all featuring against Bradford.
Despite the defeat, Martinez is optimistic for the future. He told the Wigan Evening Post: “They are young players and it’s important that they’re given opportunities to play.
“They know the football concepts of the team and the way we want to play the game, and they’ll be better players now than they were before the game.
“But it’s difficult to look into personal performances when the over-riding emotion is one of disappointment for not having the clinical touches that would have won us the game.
“The whole team were very disappointed as you can imagine. We had players in the team who were desperate for minutes on the pitch and to make an impact on the team.
“We were the better side throughout the match, but just lacked the final touch.”
