    Martinez admits keeper relief

    21 Mar 2010 - 10:45:02

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez was relieved that goalkeeper Chris Kirkland was not seriously hurt after seemingly being struck by a coin during a crucial 1-0 win over Burnley.

Kirkland was hit on the head early on in the second half of the DW Stadium encounter, which was eventually decided by a last-minute Hugo Rodallega strike.

Martinez said after the game: "We're trying to find out what happened.

"We think it was a coin. We're not too sure about it, but it's one of those events you don't want to see on a football pitch.

"I was relieved and pleased Chris carried on in the game because can you imagine if he'd been carried off because someone threw a coin.

"He then produced a key moment in the game when he saved late on from David Nugent.

"What occurred is something the authorities need to look into and something we don't want to see on a football pitch. It shouldn't be in modern football."
