Martinez - We let ourselves down

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez feels his side let themselves down during their 2-1 defeat to Hull City on Saturday. The Latics came crashing back down to earth after their defeat of Chelsea last week as goals from Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Geovanni earned Hull their second win of the season. Substitute Scott Sinclair pulled a goal back for Wigan as they threatened a late comeback but ultimately they were undone by the Tigers' quick-fire double earlier in the second half. Wigan were at times dominant in possession without creating many chances and Hull took full advantage of their naivety at the back, but Martinez knew he faced a different task to that of Chelsea. "We came here on the back of a completely different game and we could tell that it was going to be very, very different," he told Sky Sports. Concentration"Concentration levels are vital in these sorts of games. You've got to be scrappy, we had a lot of possession and in that respect we expected that, but we let ourselves down. "The hardest thing was probably to dictate the play and try to take the sting out of the performance of Hull City and we did that for long spells. "Playing away from home, we looked quite comfortable and in that respect slowly we were growing into the game." The result continues Wigan's inconsistent form, which has included wins over Aston Villa and Chelsea and defeats to Wolves and Blackpool in the Carling Cup, and the boss knows his side are better than Saturday's showing. "We're a lot better in possession and sharper than what we showed today. But the reality is we dropped our concentration in two particular moments and it really cost us. "The two goals came from the two individual lapses in concentration but I thought as a team we weren't as concentrated as we should have been."
