Wigan Athletic have clinched the capture of Chesterfield striker Caleb Folan for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £500,000.

The 24-year-old has signed a deal running until the summer of 2010 with the Latics, who beat off interest from a number of other clubs to snare the former Leeds United youngster.

Wigan boss Paul Jewell told the club's official website: "I've watched the lad twice in person, while the club has also scouted him on a number of other occasions.

"I think he's got what it takes to play at the top level. He's strong, he's aggressive, he's got a finisher's instinct and I think he will add competition in an area where the squad needs bolstering.

"I've always maintained I will never buy a player unless I think he can add something to my squad and Caleb is no different."

Folan has netted 12 goals this season for the Spireites, including efforts in Carling Cup ties against Manchester City, West Ham United and Charlton Athletic.
