    Latics want Scharner to sign

    04 Dec 2009 - 09:02:29

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez has urged Paul Scharner to end the speculation surrounding his future by signing a new contract at the DW Stadium.

The 29-year-old Austrian is out of contract at the end of the season and free to discuss a potential summer transfer with other clubs in January.

However, Martinez is hoping to persuade the versatile Scharner - who is the club's longest serving player - to extend his stay with the Latics.

Scharner joined Wigan in January 2006 from SK Brann and became the first player to make more than 100 Premier League appearances for the club back in March.

"Paul is our longest-serving player, has a very good relationship with the club and I've a very good relationship with him," said Martinez.

"But once you get to this situation, it's part of the rules that players can speak with other clubs and look at other options and I'm sure that's what he's going to do. We need to accept it.

"In that respect we want Paul to stay - to finish his career with Wigan Athletic - and it's something we'll address when the situation occurs.

"We did speak about it in the summer and we're in touch on a daily basis."
