Latics secure Kirkland
27 Oct 2006 - 14:57:24
Wigan Athletic have completed the signing of goalkeeper Chris Kirkland on a permanent deal from Liverpool.
The 25-year-old, who joined the Anfield club for £6million five years ago, has been on loan at the JJB Stadium since the start of the season.
Kirkland made his England debut in the friendly victory over Greece earlier in the season, but has seen his Liverpool career blighted by serious injury.
"Chris is a world-class keeper and a smashing pro," Wigan boss Paul Jewell told the club's official website.
"It was always our intention to make the deal permanent and it's great news that we've got it all sorted so quickly.
"His calibre has never been in question and he's been brilliant for us since he's arrived.
"I'm blessed with three excellent keepers, in Kirky, Mike Pollitt and John Filan, who's currently on loan at Doncaster. The competition is fierce and that's how I like it."
Kirkland has been ever-present for the Latics this season and has signed a deal that will keep him at the club until 2009.
