Latics linked with Carroll
08 Jun 2007 - 12:03:14
Wigan Athletic manager Chris Hutchings has targeted a goalkeeper this summer with reports linking Roy Carroll with a return to the JJB Stadium.
Carroll, currently second choice at West Ham, made 170 appearances in four years with the Latics before signing for Manchester United for £2.5million in July 2001.
Hutchings is keen to bolster his ranks with only injury-plagued keeper Chris Kirkland currently signed up for next season.
Veteran keeper Mike Pollitt has yet to sign a new one-year contract which has left the new Latics boss planning a summer move.
"We are looking to bring another goalkeeper in. We need competition for places and cover all over the park," he admitted.
"There are a lot of players being linked with us at the moment - that happens at most clubs - some of them are true and others not so."
Meanwhile, Hutchings expects Kirkland to be fit in time to begin pre-season training following shoulder surgery.
"He's making progress and is working hard at the training ground at the moment," he added.
"He's keeping his legs and body going, but can't do any handling work or diving yet - he has to be careful.
"Chris should be ready for pre-season if everything goes to plan, although he's in the hands of the physios."
