Latics line up Maloney
Wigan are expected to complete the capture of Celtic winger Shaun Maloney in a £1million deal before the transfer deadline.
Latics boss Roberto Martinez has been desperately seeking midfielder reinforcements following the sale of Charles N'Zogbia to Aston Villa earlier in the summer.
Martinez snapped up Albert Crusat on Tuesday, but the Spaniard is still trying to add to his squad before the deadline. Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has now confirmed the two clubs have agreed a fee for Maloney, thought to be £1million, and a deal should be completed before the transfer window slams shut.Maloney endured a frustrating spell with Aston Villa earlier in his career but Whelan is confident he can make an impact in the Premier League, despite his struggles at Villa Park.
"The lad is interested in coming to play in the Premier League, that's for sure," said Whelan."Roberto is a big fan of Scottish football lads. He knows they've got a big heart and he knows they fight."And, once they adjust to the pace of the Premier League, we've had some very good lads from Scotland."Roberto is an excellent judge of football and footballers."If Roberto says to me that he thinks this lad can make it, I am 99 per cent sure that the lad can make it."
