Latics boss targets four more

Roberto Martinez has revealed he is closing in on up to four new signings to supplement his Wigan Athletic squad.

The Spanish coach snapped up compatriot Jordi Gomez from Espanyol last week in his first piece of transfer business since being unveiled in the hot-seat.

Martinez managed the midfielder at former club Swansea City last season.

The new Latics boss has now set his sights on adding a few more fresh faces to a squad which he claims is already bursting with talent.

"The hardest thing in football is to be unpredictable and to able to have different ways of approaching games," he told the Wigan Evening Post.

"That's why we need to sign players who are a little bit different to what we already have - bearing in mind what we've already got is very strong and very talented.

"I think Jordi will prove to be a fantastic signing and we're looking at another three or four players that we'll hopefully bring in over the next few weeks.

"It's important that we strengthen certain positions in the squad and, after that, making sure we bring the right characters into the club.

"We aren't a club that can rely on our finances to bring players in, so we need to move in on players quicker than other clubs and be a bit more creative.

"But we can't afford to have a light squad, because that would be very unfair on the players here who've done so well over the last few years."
