Lack of goals frustrates Bruce

Wigan manager Steve Bruce insists finishing inside the top half of the Premier League table is still an attainable goal. His side battled to a goalless draw against Bolton Wanderers at the JJB Stadium on Saturday; a result that leaves them five points behind tenth-placed Spurs with a game in hand. But Bruce says regardless of what the final four games bring, he is delighted with how his team has performed this season. He said: "We want to try and finish in the top ten. The results have gone against us slightly but it's a wonderful achievement by the lads. "With four games to go and to be anywhere near the top ten is terrific." Bruce insists Wigan should have been out of sight in the first half of Saturday's game and he says an early goal could have killed the match off before Bolton ever got going. Weakness "We should have been in front," Bruce said. "If you get the first goal, we know how important that is but it wasn't to be and if you look at our Achilles heel that is it - we haven't scored enough goals. "We have relied on the defensive organisation. It was there to be seen today even after we made two changes, but we needed to score a goal "Unfortunately at this level we have made five or six chances - like we did at Blackburn last week - which we did not score and you get punished if you do not take them because you don't get that many - no matter who you play against. "It petered out to nil-nil which I suppose was inevitable." Praise Bruce praised 21-year-old Lee Cattermole and said he has put past disputes with striker Amr Zaki behind him. "We haven't got the squad to just discard anybody. It's been well-documented that I am very disappointed with what's happened, but you have to use the situation. "Lee has done very, very well for us. He has got leadership qualities and when Mario went down we have given him the armband a few times. "It adds a little bit of responsibility which I think he thrives on, but he has been a big part of the season for us."
