    Koumas ends Wales career

    07 Sep 2009 - 08:50:37

Wigan Athletic midfielder Jason Koumas has retired from international football at the age of 29.

Koumas made his debut for Wales eight years ago and went on to represent his country on 34 occasions, finding the net ten times.

A brief statement on the Football Association of Wales' official website revealed: "Jason spoke to Wales manager John Toshack to confirm that he would not have been available for Wednesday's international with Russia due to a hamstring injury.

"He has decided, however, that he wishes to retire from international football with immediate effect.

"Manager John Toshack has wished Jason well and thanked him for his past services to the team. He went on to wish him well for the future at Wigan Athletic."

The former Tranmere Rangers, West Brom and Cardiff City player is the latest Wales star to quit the national team since Toshack replaced Mark Hughes in 2004.

Robbie Savage, Ryan Giggs, Carl Fletcher, Paul Parry and Carl Robinson have all decided to concentrate on their club careers rather than play for Wales in the last few years.
