Jewell defends Cotterill gamble
06 Sep 2006 - 15:31:38
Wigan Athletic boss Paul Jewell believes deadline day signing David Cotterill has the potential to become the new Craig Bellamy.
Jewell surprised Latics fans by spending £2million to sign the 18-year-old Wales international from Bristol City, but is confident the gamble will pay off.
"Cotterill is a really good player, and he hasn't been brought here to play in the reserves - he's here with a view of being in the first team," he told the Wigan Evening Post.
"Cotterill reminds me of Craig Bellamy. I don't want to put too much pressure on him saying that, but he has that type of confidence about him.
"His best position is up front, but he can play wide right or left, and also off the main striker, so he's versatile.
"Okay, £2million might sound a lot of money for a youngster, but it might be the best £2million we will ever spend.
"Every transfer, whether it's a free or a £10million deal, is a gamble, and I feel we're investing in the future."
He added: "In the past, maybe we went for a lot more experience, but it's important to get the enthusiasm of youth and blend it with experience.
"I don't think David will be fazed coming here, he came on for Wales in the Czech Republic at the weekend and against Brazil at White Hart Lane last night.
"He wants to get into the team, not just be happy to be part of the squad, and I want that from every player."
