Jewell backs England hopefuls

Wigan Athletic boss Paul Jewell has urged Steve McClaren to call Emile Heskey and Leighton Baines into the England squad.

The pair again impressed during the Latics' 4-0 win against Manchester City on Saturday and Jewell believes that next month's friendly in the Netherlands is the ideal opportunity for McClaren to take a closer look at them.

"I am sure Steve McClaren had scouts here and they will tell him what happened today," he said.

"I am not about to start telling the England coach his job but Leighton and Emile were outstanding and I know neither of them will have their heads turned by what is being said or written about them."

Baines is uncapped at senior international level, but a regular for England's Under-21 team, while Heskey won the last of his 43 caps in 2004.
