    Heskey happy with milestone

    03 Nov 2008 - 11:01:12

Wigan Athletic striker Emile Heskey admitted his goal in Saturday's important 2-1 victory at Portsmouth had an element of good fortune about it.

The England international's last-gasp winner, his 100th Premier League goal, helped lift Steve Bruce's side out of the relegation zone and ended a poor run of results.

But the former Liverpool star admitted: "Lee Cattermole put me through and it was just a case of waiting for the right time to hit it. I think I slipped a bit when I shot, but that probably took it past the goalkeeper because I didn't hit it as well as I should.

"It's nice to reach 100 league goals, it's a good achievement, although the main thing was the result we got.

"What made it more special was that it was the winning goal. We really did need a victory to get us going again.

"I thought we put in a really good performance, the conditions were difficult with puddles of water everywhere.

"Even when Portsmouth equalised we stuck at it, didn't let our heads drop, and it was a nice feeling to see the winning goal go in.

"Everyone knows our results weren't good last month. After Middlesbrough and Liverpool beat us our confidence was knocked a little bit. We played really well in those games and didn't deserve to lose either of them.

"We were then feeling down for the Aston Villa and Fulham games, didn't play well, so we needed to pick ourselves up at Portsmouth."
