Sweden international Andreas Granqvist has left Wigan Athletic and signed a permanent deal with Groningen.
The 23-year-old defender spent the second half of last season on loan at his former club Helsingborgs after falling out of favour at the JJB Stadium.
He made his debut for the Latics in the FA Cup defeat at Portsmouth in January 2007 and went on to feature in 16 more first-team matches.
However, his last Premier League start came in the 4-1 defeat at Bolton Wanderers in December 2007.
Manager Steve Bruce told the club's official website: "Andreas is a good young player and we wish him all the best.
"He'd probably find his first-team chances limited here, however, so I can understand that, at his age, he wants to play.
"He goes with all our best wishes because he's a good pro and he's always given his all during my time at the club."
