Gomez hoping for more action

Following on from his first Premier League start in almost a year, Jordi Gomez is hoping for more time on the pitch in a Wigan Athletic shirt. Gomez has looked a much improved player so far this season and his free-kick on Saturday was much the difference between the Latics and Wolves. Despite an obvious lack of defensive commitment, Gomez is starting to win over supporters at the DW Stadium after a tough start to his Wigan Athletic career. Now, the Spaniard is hoping to feature in the first team more. Speaking after the 2-0 victory over Wolves, Gomez said: “I haven’t been playing as much as I’d have liked, but I have been working so hard on the training ground to persuade the gaffer I deserve to play. “It seems to have worked
off and I need to make the most of it. Being in the first XI means everything, and I aim to stay there now.” The midfielder also revealed that whilst he was very pleased to see his free-kick hit hte back of the net, it was the overall win that mattered most. “Yes, it was a great goal, but I was more pleased that the team won,” Gomez added. “You always try to score when you get a free-kick from that distance and I was lucky to see it go in. Sometimes they go in and sometimes they don’t so I was pleased it went for me.” There was also a commentary on the tackle he received from Karl Henry in the tenth minute of the game. Henry was sent off for the tackle which was clearly aimed at hurting the players. “I saw the player coming and I managed to touch the ball and jump. Maybe if I hadn’t jumped it would have been a lot worse, so I’m really glad I did," said Gomez. CLICK HERE FOR THE MESSAGEBOARD
