Figueroa tipped for summer exit

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez is bracing himself for the probable summer departure of Maynor Figueroa.

The Honduras left-back's stock has risen further following his wonder goal in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Stoke City.

Figueroa spotted Thomas Sorensen off his line and lofted a free-kick from just inside his own half over the head of the retreating goalkeeper.

A host of top clubs have been linked with moves for the 26-year-old defender, but Martinez anticipates keeping hold of Figueroa in January before losing him in the summer transfer window.

"Obviously we don't want to lose our best performers. Maynor has been outstanding all season, he's been a true professional as well," he said.

"He's got the World Cup in front of him next summer with Honduras and I don't think a change of club would be such a good idea for him before such a big event in his career.

"Might he go in the summer? Probably but until then we'll keep enjoying the quality of his defending and the quality of his free-kicks."
