FA investigate Latics incident
22 Mar 2010 - 11:41:57
The Football Association have confirmed that they will investigate the incident which saw Chris Kirkland struck by a missile during Wigan Athletic's 1-0 win over Burnley at the weekend.
Kirkland was hit on the head early on in the second half of the DW Stadium encounter which was eventually decided by a last-minute Hugo Rodallega strike.
An FA spokesman confirmed: "The first priority from our point of view would be ensuring any individual responsible was identified and we would like to see anyone found guilty of coin-throwing to be banned from attending football matches in this country.
"We are working with the clubs and the police to ensure this happens."
Latics boss Roberto Martinez had said after the game: "We think it was a coin. We're not too sure about it, but it's one of those events you don't want to see on a football pitch.
"I was relieved and pleased Chris carried on in the game because can you imagine if he'd been carried off because someone threw a coin.
"What occurred is something the authorities need to look into and something we don't want to see on a football pitch. It shouldn't be in modern football."
