Di Santo injury boost for Latics
30 Sep 2010 - 10:44:30
Wigan Athletic have received an injury boost after scans revealed Franco di Santo did not damage ankle ligaments against Birmingham City.
Latics boss Roberto Martinez feared the summer signing from Chelsea was set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after being caught on the ankle by the tackle which resulted in a red card for Craig Gardner during Saturday's goalless draw at St Andrew's.
The Argentinian striker was stretchered off the pitch but tests have now revealed no serious injury.
Di Santo could now return against Wolves at the DW Stadium on Saturday.
"We have been very fortunate that there is no ligament damage at all. It's a real boost for us and for Franco, because that was the real fear we had," Martinez told the Wigan Evening Post.
"Franco was just fortunate that the leg was in the air and not planted in the ground.
"If that challenge had connected with Franco's leg while he is standing, it is a broken leg - no two ways about it.
"Obviously the ankle is not in a great condition at the moment. It's swelled up and there are a few nasty cuts on there.
"But when you are Franco's age, you heal so quickly. At the moment, he is probably 50/50 for Saturday, but he's getting closer with every day that passes."
