Cautious Bruce refuses to relax

Wigan Athletic manager Steve Bruce still does not believe his side are safe from the drop even after Saturday's 2-0 win against Birmingham City lifted the Latics eight points above the bottom three.

A Ryan Taylor brace proved to be enough to sink the ten-man Blues, but Bruce is refusing to take anything for granted in the last five games of the season.

He said: "We're not safe yet - we're edging towards it but we have a bit to do.

"We've got a nice easy one at Chelsea in a week's time so we're not going around thinking we're safe. It was a nice weekend though. We won and the other results went our way.

"Contrast that to a week earlier when we lost at Portsmouth, other teams around us won - it left us scratching our heads again and thinking, 'We're not out of it'.

"There's work to be done yet and we won't be taking our foot off the pedal, that's for sure."
