    Bruce thrilled to land Cattermole

    29 Jul 2008 - 14:31:23

Wigan Athletic manager Steve Bruce sees no reason why Lee Cattermole can't become an England regular after completing the signing of the Middlesbrough midfielder.

The 20-year-old has penned a three-year deal with the Latics after moving to the JJB Stadium for a transfer fee believed to be in the region of £3.5million.

"He's got everything going for him," said Bruce. "He's young, he's courageous, he's a tireless worker and I think he can have a great career in football, hopefully for this club.

"He only turned 20 in April, and already he's played nearly 70 games in the Premier League, as well as in the UEFA Cup. That's exceptional. He can be a great leader of the future.

"I really think the sky's the limit with Lee. If he dedicates himself to the sport as he clearly has done up until now, and he keeps learning, there's no reason why he can't progress to full international honours.

"I'm absolutely thrilled we've managed to get him. We've got some really fierce competition in that midfield now, which is exactly what every good team needs.

"You can often gauge the strength of a team by the quality on the bench, and if everyone's fit there are going to be some very good players not able to get in our team this season."

Cattermole scored four goals in 91 first-team appearances for Boro.
